There are many things that interested me in economics, but the most interesting thing I really listened and watched about was how the government and charity are tied to economics. At first, I thought economy was all about money. I mean, the ups and downs of money and their conversions in different countries. I didn’t think that charity was counted as a problem in the economy as well.
First, is the government. Inflation or deflation is caused when the government invests or uninvests in their economy. We can see this when the government helps support the local products/businesses. I see this happening in the Philippines. I never thought why the slogan “Always fun in the Philippines” (it was changed recently, by the way) was a way for the government to support tourism. Like, I would see the same slogan written on banners in every tourist place I went to. I just thought that it was the theme or something, but I never thought that it was the way of the government showing that they support the one branch of the economy.
Last, is charity. As I have learned from the videos in class, charity is good during the first leg it is created. however, in the long run, it will cause significant destruction to the country/economy it serves. Think of it as training wheels. The purpose of the training wheels is to help support the economy and removed when the supported economy is beginning to do well on their own. They are good to use for a short period of time, but it is not good to have them on you for a long period of time. Existing charities can be relied on for too long, but the economy it supports will be depleted of support for their own or they will never learn to stand/create businesses.
Governments have to invest in their local businesses because it causes their inflation and deflation, and charities are good at the same time destructive. These two things have successfully changed my view on economics because of the causes and effects. They have also opened my eyes to the reason why most of my friends back home act the way they do and why they do it.
I believed that Charity was the best display of care to those in need. I thought it was the Christain thing to do. However, I learned that God called us as we serve others to seek out what is their true need. The poverty cure videos brought a lot of insight about how charity has its ups and downs. How the government of the undeveloped countries or people in need don't try to direct charity to those who need not to everyone. The videos make the point that the cure to poverty is entrepreneurship, sponsorship for local business especially the small ones, utilizing raw material and natural resources, and education.
